人类活动正在迅速侵蚀大多数生态系统的生物多样性,威胁着它们对自然和人类的诸多贡献。保护区通常被视为保护这些生态系统的关键管理工具。然而,由于缺乏历史基线数据,我们难以全面评估这些衰退,也难以确定保护区能在多大程度上弥补数十年来人为造成的退化。我们运用贝叶斯框架,对2800个热带珊瑚礁的22种鱼类群落贡献进行了建模,并在反事实情景下预测了它们的水平,以比较海洋保护区(MPA)和人为活动对未受保护珊瑚礁的相对效益。结果表明,人类活动显著降低了鱼类生物多样性和生物量相关的贡献,例如,食鱼动物生物量下降了 120%,相当于每公顷珊瑚礁净损失19公斤。相比之下,海洋保护区的效益似乎相对较低,保护措施可能仅能抵消这种下降的 5%。归根结底,只有历史悠久且得到全面保护的区域才能为自然和人类带来显著的益处。这表明,即便我们大幅加强海洋保护力度(到2030年覆盖率达到30%),也无法指望短期内的社会生态效益能够抵消人类长期以来对环境造成的影响。因此,要想为自然和人类创造一个理想的未来,我们需要转变与生态系统及其生物多样性之间的关系模式,而不仅仅局限于建立海洋保护区。
